A Horrible Take on the Clancy Verdict

Just for posterity, here are the words from John Correia:

"One reminder on the Lindsay Clancy verdict: I know people have big feels. It’s okay to feel big feels.
But you aren’t the jury. You might even have watched the trial, but you ALSO almost then certainly consumed a lot of content that the jury didn’t see, and there are reasons they didn’t see things. The whole system works to ostensibly give the jury as clean a look at the evidence as possible and then the prosecution and defense argue for how that evidence speaks.
Those 12 jurors listened carefully to all 21 days of testimony. Those jurors made it through the entire selection process to be a representative group of the defendant’s peers. In my experience jurors, especially jurors in this high profile a case, do their best to be careful and thoughtful. They take their job seriously.
They could not unanimously agree on a verdict. The judge and both sides argued for how long to let them continue and I am sure the judge tried hard to get them to go back to their jury instructions and the evidence to come to a unanimous verdict and they simply couldn’t.
This isn’t a bug in the system. It is a feature. A feature that is hard for everyone involved, but a feature nonetheless.
If those 12 people, tasked with a solemn responsibility, could not come to a consensus, then I sure as heck can’t tell from my vantage point that they were right or wrong.
The whole thing is horrific and three innocent children are the victims as well as their family.
To those who are really emotionally bound up in the non-verdict, I would recommend to get some space from it. Put it down awhile, take a deep breath, and let it go for a few days. Gain some perspective.
There’s a lot here about postpartum depression and psychosis, and almost none of us are remotely experts on that topic. And of those, only a very select few were actually engaged in this case and have seen the actual discovery.
So, deep breath everyone. Remember that your outrage is farmed for clicks and for profit. Pray for the family. And then carry on.
Will the prosecution retry? I don’t know. They can if they want to. A mistrial means officially that the trial never happened, but failing to gain a conviction on try one should give the prosecution pause for sure. But they might.
I am saddened by how many people who are merely watching from the sidelines and taking in social media takes and reports from the media are absolutely sure they know what the outcome should be. I prefer to say that the jury spoke, and while what they spoke sucks, it is what it is."
