Sad Memories, Sad Times

Today we remember perhaps the most horrific day to have happened to America in my lifetime. My kids learned of these events in school. I learned of them in real time: watching tv and reading the paper.

Yesterday was one of the more horrific days in my lifetime. An absolute icon of America First ideology was senselessly murdered by an assassin. Charlie Kirk was a man to be admired for his faith, his intelligence, and his adherence to principles both sides of the political aisle claim, but rarely demonstrate. Both of my children really enjoyed listening to Charlie Kirk and consuming his material.

Additionally, a great many of my children's friends also followed Charlie. After his murder, I cannot count how many of those youthful friends' social media accounts had posts of tribute.

It truly was a Turning Point.

Here, in memoriam, is a picture of Charlie with me, from October 25, 2020. I was running security on him during a visit he made to my town. I got to speak with him a little. He invited me to call him Charlie, therefore I continue to do so. This was before he married Ericka, though they were dating, and I did get to meet her, as well.

Charlie was nothing but kind to me and the other security members that day. He met with every person at the event that wished to meet with him, spending a few moments with each. He graciously allowed selfies for anyone who asked. Unlike so many famous people I've met, he was insistent to ask names and try to make small talk with each person. Genuine interaction.

Yesterday, my daughter wept as she recounted to me the loss in her words and from her point of view. She had met him at this event, as did my wife and I. However, she goes to college in a year, and she planned to go see him at an event when one came near. Now, she will never get the chance.
