10 Commandments of a Marksman

The Ten Commandments of the Marksman

  1. Thou shalt treat every firearm as though it be loaded, yea, even if thou knowest it not to be so.
For the way of the careless is destruction, and the end thereof bringeth sorrow.

  2. Thou shalt ever keep the muzzle pointed in a direction that is safe, wherein no harm may come to thy brother, nor thy beast, nor thy dwelling.
Lest thy hand bring forth an unintended wounding.

  3. Thou shalt not place thy finger upon the trigger, save when thine heart is fixed and thy aim made ready to fire.
For the idle finger causeth mischief, but the wise waiteth for the appointed time.

  4. Thou shalt know thy target, and consider well what lieth beyond; for the bullet goeth not where thou desirest, but where thou sendest it.
Therefore, be thou diligent, that innocent blood be not spilt.

  5. Thou shalt take hold of thy firearm with a sure and proper grip, firm yet not strained, that it move not at the moment of truth.
For as the craftsman holdeth his tool, so must the marksman hold his weapon.

  6. Thou shalt stand in the stance of readiness, feet planted sure, that thy body sway not in uncertainty.
Even as a house built upon the rock withstandeth the storm, so is the sure stance of the skilled.

  7. Thou shalt align thine sights rightly, front and rear as one, that thy projectile err not from the path.
For crooked aim is as a deceitful scale, bringing forth error.

  8. Thou shalt behold the sight picture with clarity and purpose, that thy vision guide thy hand with righteousness.
Let thine eye be single, and thy shot shall be true.

  9. Thou shalt breathe not in the moment of firing, but shalt hold thy breath in stillness, that thy body betray thee not.
For even the wind moveth the leaf, and the breath moveth the barrel.

  10. Thou shalt not jerk the trigger in haste, but shalt squeeze it gently and with resolve.
As one presseth the seal upon the scroll, so shalt thou release thy shot with grace.

Go ye forth, then, in discipline and honor, and let thy shooting be ever safe, precise, and just.
