The Mini 14 as a Minuteman Rifle

Next review: the Ruger Mini 14 (Mini 30 also).

As pictured, the Mini 14 has a 20-round magazine. With an AR bandolier, one could easily carry six more 20-round mags.

The ideal Minuteman Rifle (MR) is an AR15. A distant, but distinct second, is the AK47.
Here's how the Mini 14 stacks up to those rifles:

Capacity:
Good. 20-round mags are the norm.

Reloading:
Decent. Like the AK, one must get the hang of it before reloads get quick and smooth.

Accuracy:
Among the worst of the Minuteman Rifles I will review. 4 MOA is the rifle's best.

Weight:
At 6.5 pounds, weight for the Mini 14 is very good.

Cost:
At $750+, the price does not justify the lack of accuracy. Mag prices are also high. Might as well get an AR15.

Reliability:

The Mini 14 is fairly reliable.

Range:
The Mini 14 is best with lightweight .223 / 5.56 ammo. Also, given the barrel band issue and poor accuracy, this rifle is best at or under 300 meters.

Magazines / clips:

While 20-round mags are good, the Mini 14 mags are very expensive and hard to find.

Upgrades:
One can mount a scope or red dot fairly easily. The iron sights are adequate.

  1. The 580 series addressed the barrel whip issue. The platform is inherently more reliable and doesn't require the care and feeding of other options.
