Some years ago, my friend, Lefty , was teaching a Sunday School lesson centered on the events of the Book of Joshua in the Bible. For those who do not recall, I'll refresh your memory with a brief summary: Joshua opens with the new Nation of Israel about to enter the "Promised Land" that is the land of Israel itself. Of course, this is just after the death of Moses. As it would make sense before any military invasion, Joshua sent spies into the land to determine exactly what it was they were up against. I'll never forget Lefty's opening remark after we covered those basics: "Spies. I think of Usagi when I think of a spy. A guy in camouflage, peering through a rifle scope, learning what he can and maybe taking out a bad guy if he gets the chance." Of course, we all thought it was a funny statement. Rifle drills are a good way of practicing techniques. Here is an excellent drill to incorporate into your training: "Trident" (also known as "Delta Drill") Prepare: Place an 8" circular target in the middle of "center mass" on a standard sized silhouette target at 18 yards. Prepare three magazines - each with 5 rounds. Course of fire: Load first magazine 5 shots from a standing position Transition to sitting Load second magazine 5 shots from sitting position Transition to prone Load third magazine 5 shots from prone 30 seconds to shoot Scoring: You start with 50 points. -5 points for each hit outside the 8" circle. -1 point for each second over 30 seconds. 45-50 points: expert 38-44 points: sharpshooter 28-37 points: marksman .

I'll play, too. Seems a lot of bloggers have been trashing the M14 / M1A build of late. I cannot disagree with any of the main points that have been listed here or there. But I'll take it up a notch. Here are two statements that I'm sure will be met with skepticism: In our modern world, the .308 / 7.62 NATO round as a whole is an answer to a question that should never have been asked.  There's nothing the .308 / 7.62 NATO can do that cannot be done better.   I can hear the objections now! "Oh, the .308 is perfect, you can sweep rooms with a good semi auto and still hit targets out to 1000 yards." Actually - you can... but that is a misleading statement. Typical commercial .308 loads will go trans-sonic somewhere between 800 - 1000 yards, when shot out of the 16" barrels that are so common. Not much different than good 75 and 77 - grain 5.56. And the 5.56 is much better in the recoil and expense department. Plus - are you really capab...

One of the curses of being Sigma is that you see the crap that society brings. You see the idiocy that reigns - particularly in certain groups. You constantly find yourself thinking or saying "you have got to be kidding!" After a while, some may find themselves accustomed to hearing the phrase, and it loses its impact. Not to say I can't find another phrase (must have at least "87" of them by now), but you get the point. The flip side of the coin is a natural inclination toward positive thinking. As a very happy person, it pains me to see the stupidity and negativity brought on by society. Nay, ENCOURAGED by society! Then people wonder why I (intentionally and in a calculated manner) have few close friends... and prefer to withdraw from society periodically. .

Breakfalls. They are important. Like when its snowy, your driveway is iced over, and you go to check the mail... And slip... Then you are glad you did all that ukemi (breakfall practice). Oh... And technical stand-up works well on slick surfaces, too.
