Opportunities

As a martial arts instructor, all I really ever do is provide opportunities.
A) Opportunities to learn new material.
B) Opportunities to improve skills.
C) Opportunities to expand the student's mind and thinking with regards to the martial arts.

Opportunities to learn new material are provided.
New moves are taught.
New applications for "old" moves are taught.
New set ups are taught.
New combinations are taught.
New ways to think about a move are taught.
But,
Old ways to do a move are taught or re-taught.
Old applications are taught or re-taught.
Old setups are are taught or re-taught.
Old ways to think about a move are taught or re-taught.

Opportunities to improve skill are provided.
We do drills to work on movements.
We learn.
We teach.
We practice specifics.
We spar.
We play "games" - designed to help us learn, grow, and get better.

Opportunities to expand the student's mind are provided.
Some of these are provided within the confines of class.
Some of these are provided outside of class.
Some of these are provided in seminars or other special learning environments.

Some Students do not appreciate all of the opportunities.
Some fear sparring.
Some dislike "boring" drills.
Some do not wish to go to a seminar.
Some like to go off on tangents or completely unrelated moves than the one being taught.
Some feel that a cursory knowledge is all that is needed.
Some are always on the hunt for the newer, "more advanced" move.

Some students take the opportunities.
They reach out and grab opportunity when it comes their way.
They learn from the opportunity and grow.
They appreciate each opportunity for what it is, no more, no less.
