SKS as a minuteman rifle
Continuing with my minuteman rifle concept, let's look at the SKS as a minuteman rifle.
As pictured, the SKS has a 10-round stripper clip ready, as well as seven pockets in the bandolier, each with a 10-round stripper clip. That's 80 total rounds. Not a lot, but more than most other Minuteman Rifles, aside from the AR15 or AK47.
The ideal Minuteman Rifle (MR) is an AR15. A distant, but distinct second, is the AK47.
Here's how the SKS stacks up to those rifles:
Capacity:
Decent, but not ideal. 10 rounds with an internal magazine.
Reloading:
Not as good. There are after-market detachable magazines, but they suffer from reliability issues, as well as compatibility issues.
Accuracy:
Better than the AK47. Not as good as an AR15. To be fair, it is probably second among all possible MRs I will review. With good ammo, an SKS might be capable of 2 MOA.
Weight:
At 8.5 pounds, weight for the SKS is medium.
Cost:
At $300, this is one of the best rifles out there for the money. Be aware, there are not new SKS rifles being made. Most of them are older. Most are used. That is OK.
Reliability:
Outside a bolt action, this is probably the most reliable platform one could choose.
Range:
The 7.62x39mm round is best at or under 300 meters.
Magazines / clips:
The SKS uses stripper clips. These are far cheaper than any magazine on the market.
Upgrades:
You can buy stocks/mags/etc. DON'T!
You can buy tech sights. DO!
