Rules For a Gun Fight Revisited

Seen recently making the rounds on social media:

Some words to the wise. Shooting Advice from various Concealed Carry Instructors. If you own a gun, you will appreciate this. If not, you should get one and learn how to use it:
●Guns have only two enemies: rust and politicians.
●It's always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
●Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you.
●Never let someone or something that threatens you get inside arms length.
●Never say "I've got a gun." If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they hear should be the safety clicking off. (I prefer the sound of a round being chambered when you load a shotgun)
●The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes, the response time of a .357 is 1400 feet per second.
●The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always win - cheat if necessary.
●Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets . . . You may get killed with your own gun, but he'll have to beat you to death with it, cause it'll be empty.
If you're in a gun fight:
1. If you're not shooting, you should be loading.
2. If you're not loading, you should be moving,
3. If you're not moving', you're dead.
● In a life and death situation, do something . . . It may be wrong, but do something!
●If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about? (I call it being prepared)
●You can say 'stop' or 'alto' or any other word, but a large bore muzzle pointed at someone's head is pretty much a universal language. AMEN!
●You cannot save the planet, but you may be able to save yourself and your family.
If you believe in the 2nd Amendment, please forward.

Well, there are some problems here. I'll label them in italics under the problematic statements.

Some words to the wise. Shooting Advice from various Concealed Carry Instructors. If you own a gun, you will appreciate this. If not, you should get one and learn how to use it:
Concealed carry instructors are generally terrible at giving good self defense advice. Even if this were not the case, it's always better to cite specific sources. Don't be like the lamestream media.

●Guns have only two enemies: rust and politicians.
And liberals.

●It's always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
You've never sat through a single Jury selection if you believe this.

●Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you.
Sometimes. More often, it is to "de-escalate" by show of superior force.

●Never let someone or something that threatens you get inside arms length.
What if you, in fact, want them there? There are plenty of scenarios. The only scenario this applies to is the person who has ZERO training.

●Never say "I've got a gun." If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they hear should be the safety clicking off. (I prefer the sound of a round being chambered when you load a shotgun)
You should not be carrying a pistol with an external safety, unless it is a striker fired pistol that happened to have one and you got a good deal. In that event, leave the safety disengaged. Shotgun loading is acceptable, as a "closet-ready" configuration is ideal... but beware: that sound will set off the drugged up intruder - he will come after you.

●The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes, the response time of a .357 is 1400 feet per second.
Nobody uses .357 any more. 9mm is far more common. About 1100 fps.

●The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always win - cheat if necessary.
Agreed. People think they gotta "fight fair," and that is bunk.

●Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets . . . You may get killed with your own gun, but he'll have to beat you to death with it, cause it'll be empty.
Meh... It's better to get good sight alignment, good sight picture on a vital zone, and proper trigger manipulation. This will end the fight with far fewer rounds. Remember, you are responsible for every round you fire, up to and including its final resting place.

If you're in a gun fight:
1. If you're not shooting, you should be loading.
2. If you're not loading, you should be moving,
3. If you're not moving', you're dead.
Shoot - move - communicate is better advice. If you have not taken a class where this is taught, remedy that immediately.

● In a life and death situation, do something . . . It may be wrong, but do something!
Better yet - take a training class and learn WHAT to do. Doing the wrong thing will get you killed.

●If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about? (I call it being prepared)
While it is nonsense, we must be prepared for the fact that most people to feel that way. Only 1 person in 20 has a carry permit in Tennessee. That's the exception, not the rule.

●You can say 'stop' or 'alto' or any other word, but a large bore muzzle pointed at someone's head is pretty much a universal language. AMEN!
Don't go pointing guns at people unless actually in fear of your life or serious bodily injury.

●You cannot save the planet, but you may be able to save yourself and your family.
Yes - take some training and learn the skills you will need to do that. If your first response is something along the lines of "I know how to shoot..." then YOU NEED to take a class yesterday. If your response is "I learned how to shoot in the military / law enforcement," then YOU NEED to take a civilian class yesterday. If your first response is something along the lines of "I got my carry permit from XXX," then YOU NEED to take a class yesterday. Those four mindsets are the most deadly mindsets - for the person who has them!

If you believe in the 2nd Amendment, please forward.
Please don't. It's just Boomer-Babble, and doesn't come close to applying.

  1. Nobody carries .357? I do, in the winter. The rest of the time, it's .40 S&W. I'm considering testing some .357 SIG.
