The AR15 of Choice

From a reader:
"Great stuff this week. What do you suggest for a rifle these days?"

AR15 platform... hands down.
  • Free-floated barrel.
  • 16" / 18" / 20" barrel.
  • Backup sights
  • Sling - Vickers style or Magpul MS1, or similar.
  • 55 grain ammo - all of the same make and model.
  • 10 Magpul PMAGs.
  • Red dot or Low Power Variable Optic.

The LPVO should be a 1-4x, 1-6x, 1-8x, or similar.
Keep it dialed to "1."

Get some good training with the rifle - marksmanship as well as tactical.
Get some good training with the handgun, as well.
Get some medical training and carry medical equipment.

  1. Can't argue and wouldn't argue with any of that. Looks like a handy and practical setup.
I would also suggest one or two "magazine bandoliers" to keep the mags in, a bandolier that holds 6 magazines I mean.
The USGI bandoliers need to have the snap closure moved, in order to fit PMAGs in unfortunately.
When I'm having this discussion with folks I know who are thinking about it, I think it's good to mention the Revolutionary War idea of a Minuteman grabbing his musket and maybe a small sack with ammo and bare essentials in it, and off he goes in less than a minute.
As a modern day version of that, we can mention Steven Willeford, who used his AR-15 to help stop the 2017 Texas church shooter. He heard shooting and ran to the sound of the guns, and God bless him for that.
But I read in an interview that he didn't have any loaded magazines, he just didn't do that, so he was literally hobbling towards the scene while jamming loose rounds into a magazine. If I recall correctly, he also didn't have shoes on or maybe only had house slippers or something on.
Again, God bless the man for immediately stepping up.
But we, who have all kinds of warning bells and alarms sounding, can have loaded mags (and footwear) standing at the ready like a Minuteman.
