If I correctly remember what I read in Cooper's Corner years ago, amateurs learn and do what they do for their own reasons, not for pay. Professionals are paid to do what they do.
ReplyDeleteExcellence has more to do with motivation to improve and individual talent, or lack thereof.
I don't doubt that infantry on the sharp end lack motivation to excel due to having their lives on the line, but I also doubt they have a total lock on excellence.
