Most common pathological defense mechanisms. These defenses allow an individual to rearrange personal experiences so that they do not have to cope with reality.
1. Projection
Ascribing one's own unacceptable attributes to another person.
2. Denial
Refusing to accept a reality.
3. Conversion
Expression of a mental conflict as a physical symptom.
4. Distortion
Gross reshaping of an external reality.
5. Splitting
Separating external experiences into extreme categories of "good" and "bad" without any room for ambiguity.
6. Superiority Complex
Feeling superior to conceal internal feelings of inferiority.
7. Inferiority Complex
Feeling lack of self-worth, not living up to society's standards.
People who exhibit one or more of these traits are often seen as insane by society.
