Sighting In

So you have your AR15 rifle, and some ammo, and you need to go shooting so that you can sight in your rifle (preferred - irons and red-dot, or irons and small scope). Let's give you some simple hints to getting that rifle sighted in properly.

Use the same ammo to sight in your rifle
as you will customarily shoot.

Remember, I advocate bulking up on M193 clone ammo (preferably all of the same type) or M855 clone ammo.

Take your rifle, ammo, a few magazines, and some eye and ear protection to the range. Be sure to bring a notebook, basic tools for your scope and rifle, and something to rest the rifle on (bipod, field bag, etc.).

Here are the basic steps to firing the shot:
1. Sight Picture (includes sight alignment, if necessary)
2. Breath control
3. Trigger squeeze (includes follow through)

What to do at the range:
1. Set up your target. It should be on a regular sized sheet of paper. Put other sheets of paper to each side if you think you will need them to spot misses. Set up your first target at 25 yards.
2. Set up your rifle in the rest. The sights should be on target without you touching the rifle.
3. Aim at the target:
  • Carbines: use the 6/3 setting (8/3 on fixed carry handles) or the 300-yard hash on a BDC scope.
  • Rifles: use the "Z" setting (6/3 + 2 clicks or 8/3 + 1 click) or halfway between the 300 and 400 yard hashed on a BDC.
  • Fixed iron sights, red-dots, and crosshair scopes: aim at the middle. Nothing special.
4. Fire three well-aimed shots. Take your time.
5. Examine the target. If your shots are low and to the left, for example, adjust your sights to move the point of impact up and to the left.
6. Remember to use your instructions for how many clicks of adjustment are needed. At 25 yards, 1 MOA is 1/4 of an inch, so you may need many clicks to get on target.
7. Fire three more well-aimed shots, and make sure they hit center target. If not, repeat steps 5 & 6 until they are center of the target.

8. Put up a new target at 50 yards. Repeat steps 4 - 6 to verify zero.
  • Adjustable iron sights: set to 50/200 yard setting (6/3 - 4 clicks or 8/3 - 2 clicks)
  • BDC scopes - use the 200 yard hash mark.
  • Fixed irons, red dot, crosshair scopes - aim at the middle and make the adjustments so your shots strike the middle.
9. Put up a new target at 100 yards. Repeat steps 4 - 6 to verify zero.
  •  Adjustable irons: set to 100 yard setting (6/3 - 6 clicks or 8/3 - 3 clicks). Alternately, the 50/200 yard setting should yield shots almost exactly 1" high.
  • BDC scopes - use the 100 yard hash mark.
  • Fixed irons - you probably want to use Improved Battlesight Zero (IBZ), so your shots should be 1" high.
  • Red dot - you probably want a 50/200 zero, so the bullets should impact at the top portion of the red dot at 100 yards.
  • Scope - if you want a 100 yard zero, now is the time to make adjustments.

Now you are ready to shoot for real training!
