Self Defense

Over the weekend, George Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter in the killing of Trayvon Martin in 2012. Some thoughts:

The racist media is the only reason the trial came about.

We now have the term "white hispanic."
- I wonder when the same racist media will start calling Obama a "white black?"

No, Zimmerman shouldn't have been going up to confront Martin.

And, no, Martin should not have circled back around to ambush Zimmerman!
(Did you actually hear about this in the news? Didn't think so.)

On that note, Martin shouldn't have been under the influence of illegal drugs, either.

Some facts:
Trayvon Martin was 6'2" and 175 pounds 5'11" and 158 pounds at the time of his death.
George Zimmerman was 5'8" and 195 pounds at the time. He is reportedly over 300 pounds now.

The evidence points out that during the key moments, Martin was mounted on Zimmerman, punching him in the face and slamming his head into the ground. This is typical of a fight. This is why at my martial arts school, we specifically teach how to escape the mounted position, and we specialize in study of doing so while being punched.

Six jurors rendered the verdict. Most places have 12 jury members. Florida has exceptions.

For a verdict to have been reached, all jury members must unanimously agree to the verdict. If even one juror holds a different opinion, then it is a "hung jury" and the case is often dismissed.

The extent of Zimmerman's injuries are almost entirely irrelevant. What is and was relevant is that he feared for his life. The only relevance the injuries have is that they do happen to substantiate his claims. Had he been uninjured, there might have been a harder time trying to prove fear for his life.

The case should never have gone to court. There was no evidence from which to prosecute.

Liberals do not care about evidence, proof, or facts.
We already knew this, but we are seeing it again.

  1. Autopsy reports has Martin at 5'11" and 158 pounds.

This is the part of "The Narrative" I have problems with. There is nothing to indicate that Zimmerman was fighting back.
No defensive wounds, no bruising, no marks on Martin's clothing, no DNA on the clothing to indicate a move to grab, punch or push away.

If I'm sucker punched, knocked down and blows continue to rain down on me when I offer no defense; that isn't a fight, it is plain out and out assault and battery.

  2. Bob,

Thanks as always for reading and commenting.
You are right on the height / weigh. I will amend the post.

As for the fighting back, I base that assumption on Zimmerman's testimony. Probably more grappling in nature as it is difficult (if nigh impossible) to launch a good striking attack from under mount. The most effective grabs from there to neutralize punches are full body and arm grabs with encircling motion, so there would be minimal bruising, minimal DNA transferal, and rips to clothing.

Martin only had slight damage to one finger, indicating that not many punches landed. Obviously enough to do the damage to Zimmerman's face, but Martin didn't just keep punching during the 10-minute altercation.

You are 100% right that this was an assault, plain and simple. Zimmerman was ambushed. He was outmatched physically and probably in terms of martial skill. This is reason #1 to carry a gun: when your life is on the line to defend against a taller, more aggressive opponent.

    1. USAGI,

I've read the testimony and watched one or more of the video re-enactments. I have to question if the time and distance wasn't caused simply by Zimmerman covering up, moving away from the attack and possibly grappling -- all defensive in nature. Combine that with the limited training he received -- mostly in grabs as you say and you can see where it was a very one-sided 'fight'.

This one had me really perplexed also until some doctor/medical examiner pointed out what should have been obvious. Bruising is the discoloration of the skin caused by the leakage of blood from ruptured cells.

Where was Trayvon's blood flowing? Into his chest for a little time.
There was little or no bruising because there wasn't sufficient blood flow for it to occur.

but Martin didn't just keep punching during the 10-minute altercation.but Martin didn't just keep punching during the 10-minute altercation.

One of the things that really shocked me when I studied the shooting was how little actual time lapsed.

7:13:10 — Zimmerman says he does not know Martin's location.
7:13:41 — The end of Zimmerman's call to Sanford police.[14]
      7:16:00 – 7:16:59 — Martin's call from the girl goes dead during this minute.[14][15]
7:16:11 — First 911 call from witness about a fight, calls for help heard.[16]
      7:16:55 — Gunshot heard on 911 call.[17]

Much less than 4 minutes and probably closer to just 2 minutes from the probable start of the assault to the gun shot. How much time was consumed by Travyon's approach, by the limited exchange of words?

This was one of the factors that really convinced me Zimmerman's account was accurate and truthful. Probable sucker punch to start, overwhelming use of force and disparity of position -- as the saying goes (Ron Burgundy) 'that escalated quickly'.
And given that time frame, I can see how only defensive or escape actions fit into the forensic evidence.
